The current membership of the Tri-State Budgerigar Society cordially invites you to attend one of our meetings, and hopefully, to join our club.
The club attracts budgie enthusiasts from the New York/New Jersey area, as well as from Pennsylvania and beyond. In addition to novices, the club's membership includes people from all levels of the hobby, including intermediate and champion breeders, whose knowledge, experience, and leadership are invaluable to the beginning hobbyist.
Meetings generally take place on the third Sunday of the month at 2 PM and are held at the home of one of the members. In addition, we have an annual Sunday picnic at a central New Jersey park. It is generally well-attended by members, families and friends. The club provides soda, juices, hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken. Everyone brings side dishes. In December we hold an annual Christmas party at an area restaurant. As with the picnic, members, families and friends are all invited.
Our annual judged show takes place in July. The show is sanctioned by the Budgerigar Association of America (BAA) and many experienced breeders participate, as well as new exhibitors. Prizes includes an array of ribbons and plaques. Our Junior Division also receives ribbons and plaques.
At our regular meetings, when we do not have a guest speaker or special activity, one of our members gives a presentation on a topic, using charts, photographs, and other visual aids. The floor is then opened up for comments, ideas, and questions. Past meetings have featured a lecture by an avian veterinarian who discussed the causes, symptoms and cures for various health problems of budgies. Some of our members take turns making certain presentations to the club in their special areas of interest, which have included: presentations on development of eggs, including videos demonstrating candling; talks on breeding dominant pieds and violets; the genetics of spangles; aviary construction; nutrition; photography of birds; feeding wild plants and herbs to budgies; poisonous and hazardous substances; show preparation; finding the right pet sitter; and record keeping.
Most of our meetings include time for "budgie banter," an open discussion where members can ask questions, admit problems, complain, boast, inform, suggest solutions, or offer friendly advice.
A monthly newsletter is mailed to all members as a means of verifying decisions made and items completed, as a reminder of upcoming events, and as a vehicle to provide members unable to attend particular meetings with a quick overview of club happenings.
