Show Information
BAA (Budgerigar Association of America)
TSBS (Tri-State Budgerigar Society)
Entries
This show is only open to the parakeet species Melopsittacus undulates. This species, which is native to Australia, is bred for both pet and exhibition purposes. These birds are known as budgerigars, budgies, English parakeets, American parakeets, and common shell parakeets, to name a few.
Two separate categories of birds will be judged. The first consists of five divisions with classes for exhibition budgerigars as listed in the BAA Schedule of Classes, for owner bred and banded birds. These birds will ultimately vie for Best in Show awards and Challenge Certificates (CC) for Best of Variety. The second has two divisions for pets with no requirements for birds to be banded or bred by the exhibitor. The larger exhibition (English) budgies as well as the smaller common birds, referred to as parakeets (American), can be entered in this open pet category.
All birds must be entered in the appropriate categories between the hours of 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM on the day of the show. Entries will be closed at 10:00 AM and the judging will begin promptly, beginning with the pet birds.
Each bird may be entered in one category, division and class. There is no limit on how many birds a person may enter as long as the allowed number of birds per cage is adhered to and rules are followed.
Anyone entering birds that is unsure of what status level they should enter at or how or where to enter their birds, is encouraged to ask a TSBS member for assistance rather than enter birds incorrectly. Exhibitors may not enter a level below what they are qualified for and if they enter a higher level than qualified for, they must remain at that level for future shows. If a bird is entered in a wrong class, it risks being disqualified. Every attempt will be made to correct errors before the correct class is judged. The show committee reserves the right to check band numbers where applicable or to refuse any exhibit it considers detrimental to the show.
Checking In and Checking Out
All birds must be checked in and out by show personnel. Only the judge or show personnel may handle exhibits, go behind the staging area or come up to the bench during the judging. The two pet divisions will be judged first and given their awards. Those birds may then be requested by their owners and leave the premises before the entire show is over. All BAA classes must remain in the show until after all levels of judging are complete. All exhibitors with birds on the final bench winning in BAA Divisions, Best in Show and Best of Variety Challenge Certificates are asked to allow birds to remain on the staging for viewing and photographs, for no less than 15 minutes. This is for the enjoyment of those present and also in consideration of the show personnel that have not really had a chance to watch the judging as it took place. Birds not on the final bench may be checked out immediately after judging by presenting a steward with your yellow copy of the entry form. For security reasons, identification may be asked for.
Rules BAA Divisions
There are five status levels for all exhibitor bred and banded birds. They are Junior, Novice, Intermediate, Champion, and Endangered Mutation (EMD) - for Best in Show and Challenge Certificates (CC).
Exhibitor pays a $2.00 entry fee per bird, per division; no fee beyond ten birds in each division.
Only one bird per standard show cage will be allowed.
No marks, names, toys, seed or water cups allowed; seed may be on cage bottom.
Birds must be bred by the exhibitor, wearing closed bands traceable to that exhibitor.
All birds entered in the "young" class must wear a 2009 band.
Birds must be entered according to the current BAA Schedule of Classes provided.
A two part entry form (white and yellow) must be completely filled out.
Name, address, band code, division, section, class and bird's description must be given.
Show Secretary shall issue cage numbers and matching numbered show tags for proper division.
Complete your show tags with name, address, band code, section, class and bird's description.
Hang tag for matching bird on the cage on the lower left cage bar.
Stewards check form, tags and birds; stage birds and give exhibitor yellow copy of entry.
BAA judge ranks each division's birds starting with class to top ten. (Can be up to thirteen birds.)
Division winners will all be compared for possible placement on the final bench for Best in Show.
CC winners will be determined at the time of Best in Show selection; certain criteria must be met.
Note: Endangered Mutation Division
The regular portion of the BAA show consists of the exhibitor status division levels of Junior, Novice, Intermediate and Champion. The new Endangered Mutation Division is comprised of varieties and colors considered rare. These rares will be shown together even though the exhibitors themselves are from any of the other four regular divisions. EMD birds will be judged first and ranked without regard to exhibitor status. Division winners will be compared later to the winning birds in the exhibitor's respective division for a possible bench win there, which would then also allow for a possible Best in Show award as well.
TSBS Open Pet Divisions (For all birds; banded or not; owner bred or not)
A) Large Exhibition Type (English)
BAA criteria will be used to judge English budgies. The best ten birds shall are ranked based solely on show quality appearance; not pet appeal.
B) Small Pet Type (American)
Friendlier, more-creative criteria is used to award certificates based on pet appeal; not show quality. Examples are Most Colorful, Most Acrobatic, Friendliest, Best Talker, etc.
You may enter division A, B or both, using a separate entry form but each division must be in a separate cage. The exhibitor may choose to enter either type of bird in either division but a small type pet will not fairly compete against the larger exhibition birds in A; a large exhibition type would not have an advantage in B. Children entering the A division may be disappointed if they place low or not at all. It depends on what type of award you would like to win. The following applies to both of these divisions.
Exhibitor pays a $2.00 entry fee per bird, per division; no fee beyond ten birds in each division.
Any cage is fine, (smaller cage if possible); no name should be visible; toys, seed, water are allowed.
No more than two birds per cage allowed and they must be entered in the same division.
Any bird may be entered; no requirements for birds to be banded or bred by the exhibitor.
Birds with clipped wings or multiple spots may be shown; but this may result in a lower ranking in A.
A two part entry form (white and yellow) must be completely filled out; no Schedule of Classes used.
Name, address and bird's complete description must be given.
Show Secretary shall issue cage numbers and matching numbered show tags for proper division.
Complete your show tags with name, address and bird's description.
Hang tag for matching bird on the cage on the lower left cage bar.
Stewards check form, tags and birds; stage birds and give exhibitor yellow copy of entry.

Entry and payment constitutes acceptance of all show rules. TSBS and its members accept no liability or responsibility for loss or damage to exhibited birds, property or for injuries to any members, exhibitors, vendors or guests either at, or enroute to or from, this show or any meeting or function of the club.
